Artesans
The traditional dress in Todos Santos cannot be called anything but works of art. The womens huipiles, or shirts, are tightly hand woven in intricate patterns. All of the fabric is woven on looms in the aldeas, particularly in Tzunul. Generally, the clothing is tailored by men, but all the intricate weavings are done by women. The traditional women´s dress is made up of a corte, a dark blue wrap around skirt with light blue stripes, held up by a wide woven belt, and a huipil; usually hand woven by the woman wearing it, and tucked into the corte. The men´s traje is made up of the red and white striped pants, each varying from the other in style of cut and pockets; sobrepantalones, which are like black chaps made from a felt-like material, and the traditional shirt, with its wide woven collar. Both men and women wear the woven straw hat with a purple felt band.
The artisans in Todos Santos make more than clothing. There are also a different number of bags, called morales, which are either croqueted, usually by men, or other bolsas, constructed from women’s huipiles. They make bags of all different sizes, from change purses, to shoulder bags, to computer bags, to bookbags, to yoga mat bags. There are also other beautiful woven goods like hats and shawls.
